What Is Microscopic Ear Wax Removal?

Microscopic ear wax removal — also known as microsuction — is a clinical procedure that uses an operating microscope and a fine, gentle suction probe to remove wax from the ear canal. Unlike traditional ear syringing or irrigation, no water is used at any stage.

Because the GP works under direct microscopic visualisation throughout the procedure, it is more precise and carries a lower risk of discomfort, infection, or injury to the ear drum compared to traditional methods.

At Turramurra Family Practice, the procedure is performed by our trained GPs. You do not need a referral from an ENT specialist — simply book directly with us.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is microsuction painful?
Most patients find the procedure comfortable. You may hear a loud suction noise, and occasionally there is a brief sensation of coolness or mild discomfort if the wax is impacted, but it is generally very well tolerated. If at any point you feel discomfort, let your GP know and they will pause.
Do I need to use ear drops before my appointment?
We recommend using olive oil or a pharmacy ear drop for 3–5 days before your appointment if possible — this helps soften the wax and can make the procedure quicker and more comfortable. If you haven’t had time to do this, don’t worry; please come in anyway and we will advise on the best approach.
Is it safe for children?
Microscopic ear wax removal can be suitable for children, though age limits apply. Please call us on 02 9144 4545 before booking a child’s appointment so we can confirm suitability and prepare appropriately.
How much does it cost?
Please contact our reception team on 02 9144 4545 or via our online booking form for current fee information, as this may vary depending on the complexity of the procedure.
Can I have both ears done in one appointment?
Yes — both ears are typically assessed and treated in the same appointment if required. Your GP will advise you during the consultation.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is required. You can book directly online or by calling us. New patients are very welcome.
